Color Fun...

For learning colors, counting, and just for fun, This one of a kind idea is one you'll want to share with everyone! And you're kids will want to play over and over and over again!

1. food coloring
2. dried pasta (any kind)
3. rubbing alcohol
4. ziploc bags

Directions:
1. place noodles in ziploc bag. double bag or place in a tupperware bowl in case of leaks.
2. completely cover the noodles with rubbing alcohol
3. mix in food coloring
4. let the noodles sit to absorb color
(the longer they sit, the deeper the color. I left mine over night) 5. once desired color is reached, drain liquid (do not rinse) and dry noodles on cookie sheets

enjoy! let your child's imagination flow.

the muffin tin helps sort the noodles by color and shape.
it has also helps learn to count.
for older kids, you could use the noodles to make necklaces and other art projects

imagination and creativity (and photos) of this project is credited to brit p., thanks for all your amazing ideas!

Cool idea! Do the colors rub off though?

I would have to guess that the alcohol would set the colors, but I don't know for sure. Doesn't vinegar help to set colors too?

I want to try this sometime so I'll let you know if it rubs off.

Fun! I'd love to know if the colors rub off too, get on hands, etc. They look beautiful.

Great idea! I'm not sure what rubbing alcohol is though.. is it an American thing that we have a different name for? I'm off to google it!

Oh how fun. My son will love this activity. I wonder if you can use kool aid and vinegar to dye pasta?? Maybe I'll try it.

I did this with my kindergarten class. I only used a cap-full of rubbing alcohol with a ziploc bag full of noodles and the color set fine. I just shook the noodles around and left them for a half an hour. Then I let them dry on paper towels. The color did not rub off and we were able to make gorgeous noodle necklaces.

This works with white rice, too, with the same directions.

If you have a large tub of rice for inside play, coloring some of the rice or adding colored pasta is a fun addition.

Love this..especially with the new neon food color they have..It also works with just a couple capfuls of alcohol. You just have to make sure you gently squish the noodles and color mixture around till colored. I then put them on cookie sheets to dry so none of the noodles stick together!

Hi,
you can also try liquid watercolor. I get mine at www.discountschoolsupply.com
you don't need rubbing alcohol with this and it is much cheaper than buying the small amounts of food color. It is also non toxic for all the little kiddos that like to eat the pasta!
I love your site! Thank you.

Love this idea and tried it this weekend. How in the world did you get your red so RED and your blue so BLUE? My red looks orangey and my blue looks more greenish - i guess since the pasta is yellow like most pasta is. I let them soak for a full day and night. ::sigh::

Hi there! Found you on Pinterest and loved this idea. Similar to a commenter above, Cara, my colors were just not as strong. My blue looked green and my red looked orange. Did you just use a TON of food coloring? I let it soak for two days. Or when it dries will it get darker. Looking for any pointers. My toddler is going to LOVE the sorting game.

Thanks!

I don't think that this is a good idea, coz kids put stuff into their mouths and rubbing alcohol is toxic.
